Simulation-based otorhinolaryngology emergencies boot camp: Part 1: Curriculum design and airway skills.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Simulation-based boot camps provide novice trainees with an accelerated introduction to the essential skills needed for successful clinical management and professional development in a format that is valued by both residents and faculty. Boot camps have been described in numerous surgical and medical disciplines, including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, cardiothoracic, and general and neurosurgery. Based loosely on the concept of military boot camps, residents actively participate in a concentrated variety of exercises designed to develop basic competence in relevant psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills. Simulationbased boot camps are generally 1 to 3 days long, and the curriculum is designed to provide hands-on experience learning skills of increasing complexity. Boot camps are of particular value in smaller specialties like otolaryngology. Although each residency program has a relatively small number of residents at any given postgraduate year (PGY) level, boot camps enroll multiple learners from various institutions at similar PGY levels. Faculty can exchange ideas and teaching techniques as well as take advantage of simulation-based medical education not necessarily available at their own institution. This purpose of this article, the first in a series of three, is to describe the first Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Emergencies Boot Camp curriculum design and basic airway skills stations; subsequent articles will detail the remaining elements of the course curriculum, allowing other institutions to implement this curriculum and/or develop their own simulation-based curricula. To accomplish psychological safety, formal objective evaluations are not conducted during the boot camps. However, formal evaluations of the boot camp programs by both residents and faculty demonstrate high levels of satisfaction and are used for programmatic improvement.

INTRODUCTION This second article in a series of three describes four of the eight total learning stations provided to novice otorhinolaryngology (ORL) residents during the ORL Emergencies Boot Camp. Part 1 described the overall boot camp design and the basic airway skills stations. This article, part 2, describes stations designed to teach moderately complex emergency skills. The final installm...
متن کاملAn Innovative Clinical Skills “Boot Camp” for Dental Medicine Residents
During a 1-year hospital-based residency, dental residents are required to rotate through many departments including surgery, medicine, and emergency medicine. It became apparent that there was a gap between clinical skills knowledge taught in dental school curriculum and skills required for hospital-based patient care. In response, a simulation-based intensive clinical skill "boot camp" was cr...
متن کاملEmergency Medicine Residency Boot Camp Curriculum: A Pilot Study
INTRODUCTION Establishing a boot camp curriculum is pertinent for emergency medicine (EM) residents in order to develop proficiency in a large scope of procedures and leadership skills. In this article, we describe our program's EM boot camp curriculum as well as measure the confidence levels of resident physicians through a pre- and post-boot camp survey. METHODS We designed a one-month boot...
متن کاملTrauma Boot Camp: A Simulation-Based Pilot Study
INTRODUCTION Interns are often unprepared to effectively communicate in the acute trauma setting. Despite the many strengths of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program, the main shortcoming within the course is the deficiency of teamwork and leadership training. In this study, we describe the creation of an interdisciplinary boot camp in which interns' basic trauma knowledge, level of c...
